Overview

Yaochi 「矢落」is a mom + pop Okonomiyaki restaurant based in Takarazuka, Japan. They are a small family owned business. When restaurants closed in Japan for dine-in customers in light of COVID-19, they approached me to help them build out a robust digital presence to strengthen their presence in the takeout food industry. Throughout my work with them, I acted as both a designer and developer.

My work with Yaochi can divided roughly into three parts — creating a digital brand identity, building out their first ever restaurant homepage, and designing takeout menus.

Digital Identity + Branding

Before jumping into the website construction or takeout menu designs, I first formulated a digital brand identity for the restaurant. This process involved designing logos, proposing color palettes, and deciding on typography.

In an effort to respect the integrity of the existing brand identity they had, I centered the color options on mostly red tones, combined with other accent colors and fonts that reflected traditional Japanese design, otherwise known as the wafu 「和風」aesthetic. I consciously made this design decision due to one of their major selling points being a historically family owned business rooted in a very traditionally Japanese store front.

The Style Guide Proposal

The above proposal was presented to the owners at Yaochi, and we decided on a final digital brand identity, which were then reflected across the materials I later created for them.
